If those of you with Checkpoint machines in your area could email me and let

Subject: New Arcade/William's Space Station
Date: 27 Apr 92 15:38:25 GMT
I just ran across a new arcade, and found a William's Space Station pin
inside. Anyone have any tips for this game? From the displays used for
the scores, I would guess that the pin is from somewhere in the late '80's
(the displays are similar to those used in F-14 Tomcat). This game has
no inlanes, and so plays a bit differently than most games I'm familiar with.
For those of you in the Silicon Valley area, the arcade where I found Space
Station apparently just opened. It's called the "Out of Control Arcade",
and is pretty much on the dividing line between Sunnyvale and Mountain View,
just off of El Camino Real. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the
street it's on. Anyway, you can find it by going east on El Camino Real
from highway 85. You'll go through one stoplight, and then will see an
Oil Changers on your right after a block or two. Turn right immediately after
the Oil Changers, and the arcade will be in a little blue-gray building on
your right. If you hit Bernardo Avenue (the second stoplight) while on El
Camino, you've gone too far.
As I remember it, they had the following pins: High Speed, Cyclone, Comet,
Terminator II, Space Station, some Bally game that I think has been discussed
here lately (Blackwater something or other?), and Big Guns. All games were
a quarter per play, and the Space Station gives five balls per game. The
games all appeared to be in pretty good shape, and the attendant (might even
be the owner for all I know, he was an older guy) was working on the High
Speed machine while I was there. From the comments he made while I was
playing T2 it was obvious that he was familiar with the game, so maybe I've
gotten lucky and found an arcade where the people running the place actually
care about their pins. Now I just need to go back and talk them into getting
TAF...
I think the place opens at 11:00 on weekdays, 10:00 on weekends. If you're
in the area, stop in. The pins are in good shape, and the people seemed to
be pretty friendly. I hope it stays that way.

You'll want to pick up a can of a product called "Cover Your Glass" from
Steve Young in LaGrange New York. I don't have the address or number handy
but I can get it if someone else doesn't beat me to it! I used it to
glue down some flakes that started to appear on my Flash Gordon backglass
and I was extremely impressed with the results. Polyurethane is OK, but is
will yellow with age. A spray can is a no-no since you will probably end up
blowing all of the flakes off.
Anyway, the CYG stuff is an acrylic based sealer that basically forms a layer
of clear hard plastic over the paint. It takes a good long time to dry
(measure in days, not hours) but as I said, the results are fantastic. One
pint of the stuff is good for about two full size backglasses.

What *is* it with Williams' outlanes ? They're voracious !
Actually, I've noticed two different types :
Plain old metal rails and metal posts with a little rubber ring.
The rails are deadly -- the ball just swishes right on down. Note this on T2
and TAF's left outlane. The ball just zips straight down. No way to bounce it
back out.
The rubber posts, though are different. TAF has one on the right inlane (look
behind the metal plate by the end of the Bear Kick ramp). You can 'english'
the
ball back into play off of these. Same thing with Hurricane on the left/right.
I've even had TAF balls hit the rail separating the two inlanes (2 bear kicks
and Thing Flips lights) and bounce right over the outlane rail. Of course, for
each of these, I also get one that bounces somewhere good ...

Subject: PAPA II+ Pinball Tournament May 30 - June 1
Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1992 04:58:22 GMT
Competitive pinball is on the march -- hot on the heels of the
fabulous PAPA II pinball tournament held just two months ago in New
York City comes "PAPA II+", a followup tournament scheduled to be held
the weekend of May 30 through June 1.
The tournament is sponsored by SportsPark USA (on Route 22W in Union,
NJ) and will be held under the auspices of the Professional and
Amateur Pinball Association. Proceeds from the tournament will
benefit Cancer Care of New Jersey.
Best of all, the tournament organizers are awarding record-breaking
prizes to the top 12 finalists, including a 1st prize of $2000, a 2nd
prize of $1000, and a 3rd prize of $500.
Entries will cost $10 each, and you may reenter as often as you like.
Qualifying rounds will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 30th and 31st
from 9:00 AM to midnight. Finals will be held Monday evening, June
1st.
SportsPark USA is located at 2411 Route 22W, Union, NJ 07083; you can
call 1-908-687-0500 for details.
This is all I know about the tournament so far, except that the
announcements just went out yesterday, so everyone in this group is
getting the latest news about a tournament that looks like it'll be a
blast. I hope to be there, though since I'm scheduled to be
white-water rafting with some friends that weekend, I may wind up a
spectator rather than a participant. In any event, the competition
should be tough -- but potentially very rewarding.
(And here's an inside tip: I understand that the games will be Data
East and Premier only, as SportsPark doesn't deal with Betson's -- and
when you're on the east coast but don't deal with Betson's, you don't
have access to dozens of Williams games for your tournament. Don't
quote me on this, though; I just heard it somewhere...)

The key words here are "promo flyer". "No moving parts" is just
marketing BS, and it's not clear who they're trying to fool. There's
the ball diverter, for one thing (how do you think the balls ever get
*out* of there, anyway?).
(The SuperCharger was the second thing to break after the plunger on
the game I play -- though since the plunger came broken, maybe that
doesn't count. It still has grey electrical tape holding the left
side of it together, though I can't now remember the problem that tape
was supposed to help solve.)
On the other hand, accelerating pinballs via successive magnets is,
without a doubt, the coolest idea to hit the pinball world since Rudy.
Too bad it's used for such a non-essential part of the game. Imagine
if the magnets were lined up someplace else on the machine. You could
have them grab a weak shot up the left side and rocket it up the ramp.
Or you could have them snag a loop shot just before the ball reaches
the top flipper and reverse it back down the left side, just for fun
(and player frustration).
Might get a little confused during multiball, though (as the
SuperCharger ramp occasionally does).

If you mean the upcoming tournament at SportsPark, we don't know any
details yet, other than what was posted.
If you mean tournaments in general, then it all depends on who's
running the tournament. The PAPA tournaments are run using the PAPA
scoring system, at least for the finals (where the finalists play each
other with the player coming in first getting 10 points, the player
coming in second getting 5 points, third getting 1 point, and fourth
getting 0 points).
But which games are played depends on all sorts of things. The PAPA
tournament last February in New York got games from Betsons, which was
kind enough to loan the games out for a weekend. Smaller tournaments
could well use whatever games are on hand. However, a tournament of
any size really needs to get a couple of dozen machines to keep all
the players busy trying to qualify -- you just can't have a couple
hundred players standing around waiting for time on the only two
pinball machines in the room...
This is usually the biggest problem in running a tournament: most
arcades don't have more than a half dozen or so games, so they have to
find someone willing to loan them out. A lot of organization needs to
go into all of this, which is why you don't see more pinball
tournaments. (Even SportsPark, which is an arcade/amusement center
about the size of the Astrodome, has only about 8 pinball machines --
something that speaks volumes about the relative importance and
popularity of pinball today.)
If possible, it's good to announce the games beforehand. Better still
would be to announce which settings will be in effect (i.e., no extra
balls, games set on "extra hard", etc.). This wasn't done at the last
PAPA tournament, though it will be done at the next one. Making sure
everyone knows the games and settings helps level out the playing
field, so to speak...
Then there's the question of whether you want to have any special
contests along with the main event (e.g., doubles, highest single
ball, etc.).
So there are probably at least as many ways to run a tournament as
there are tournaments. The main thing is trying to push for more of
them and on a more regular basis. That seems to be happening now,
thanks to PAPA, and the regularly scheduled pinball expos.
(And as we learn more about the upcoming tournament at SportsPark,
I'll be sure to post the details.)

Hi.
I was at an arcade when I went home last weekend (NW Indiana)
and stumbled upon a machine called "Class of 1812." Played
it a bit and really loved the multiball music.
Since I am still kinda new to this group, I was wondering
if anybody could tell me a little more about this game.
Thanks!

Hmm, the super-charger loop sports "NO MOVING PARTS" in the Williams
promo flyer. I'd think this sucker was one of the least-worrysome
parts.

Could someone please explain how tournaments are run? What is the
game format, is the game to be used announced ahead of time, how
are the winners decided etc...

The only one I can remember playing is Data East's Robocop.
Ramp shot count and score reset to zero, but locked balls
remain.
Very clean (A little spartan in comparison to newer machines) layout,
the only "gimick" being the jump ramp. Specials awarded for score, jump
master, and "level 2" of multiball (after jackpot, X target hits
followed by a ramp jump). Neat game.

Hi Pin-people,
Has anybody come across this bug/feature of HSII elsewhere:
The tunnel shot lights a special (extra ball) at 7 shots. I managed to get
13 before the ball drained and I got my extra ball. When I hit the tunnel
while playing the extra ball I was informed that I now had 14 tunnel shots and
special would be lit at 7, and the machine consequently lit the specials. The
ball drained again and I got another extra ball...another tunnel shot, another
drain, another eb. I managed 5 eb's like this, and a humungous (by my paltry
standards anyway) 279,000,000.
Is this a bug or a feature ????
