³ Eeeek! Night At The Palace.  We would like to share it with you:           ³

³ At ONE BBSCON (THE BBS convention) held in Denver, Colorado this past      ³
³ August, thousands of BBS owners, would-be owners, sysops (systems          ³
³ operators), and users gathered to share ideas and take part in workshops   ³
³ on everything from how to run a BBS for profit to legal aspects of         ³
³ running a BBS.                                                             ³
³                                                                            ³
³ Among all the talk and learning and hurried meetings, the strongest        ³
³ undercurrent of the convention was the fact that BBS operators, unlike     ³
³ many of their counterparts in business, ENJOY HELPING EACH OTHER.          ³
³                                                                            ³
³ The owners of Eeeek BITS! have taken this phenomenon to new heights in     ³
³ organizing Eeeek! Night at the Palace - where sysops and users from 21     ³
³ BBS's around the Southland are gathering together to share an              ³
³ entertaining evening as well as to help those less fortunate.              ³

³ AOS (Avatar Online Systems) applauds fellow Sysops for their help in       ³
³ making this night a success and thanks Jackie and Kryss for their          ³
³ unstinting efforts on behalf of BBS's, children, and the homeless.         ³

³ It is our firm hope that through this event the public might learn more    ³
³ about the features of good bulletin boards that are available to them      ³
³ simply by using a modem and their computer.  On AOS, for example, we help  ³
³ students with their studies by providing professional tutors online.       ³
³ Many youngsters make friends with others all over Los Angeles, Orange      ³
³ County, and Simi Valley, and since the nature of boards is that they are   ³
³ multi-ethnic/multi-cultural, we see a tremendous hope for the future in    ³
³ the good will that is encouraged and promoted through the use of good      ³
³ bulletin boards.                                                           ³

³ ED:  We would, again, like to thank ALL the participating BBSes & Sysops,  ³
³ and their users who did SOOOO much to help with that event! The Haunted    ³
³ House in the afternoon accomodated over 700 children & the evening event   ³
³ brought in a ton of food for the victims of the Fires. None of it would    ³
³ have been possible without the help of all the good-hearted people in the  ³

³ Reflections On An Old and New Year!                                        ³
ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´
³ If you are like most of us, you have taken a moment of time to reflect on  ³
³ the past year and its good points and bad.  I imagine you have also looked ³
³ towards the new year as well to consider the possibilities of things yet   ³
³ to come.  Well this past year, 1993, was a very good year for us at Eeeeks!³
³ We had a trusted and loyal friend put faith in us and allow us to "experi- ³
³ ment" in her place of business.  In her doing this, we expanded our busi-  ³
³ ness realms extensively.  She knows who she is and knows how much we truly ³
³ appreciate all her outstanding efforts.  As a result, we look forward to   ³
³ a new and exciting new year with many new realms of the computer industry  ³
³ before us.  We are working and developing new ideas and trying to advance  ³
³ the common usage of computers.                                             ³
³ Upon reflection, we had a wonderful year.  One filled with happy faces of  ³
³ children dressed in costume at a Halloween haunted house.  Without the     ³
³ twenty one bbses in the L.A. area and the Underground Informer Magazine,   ³
³ the efforts to do a benefit for these children would not have happened.    ³
³ Not to mention the magnanimous generosity of the owners of the Hollywood   ³
³ Palace opening their doors for the children as well as lending their staff ³
³ to the event.  Celeste, of the Underground Informer went above and beyond  ³
³ the call of duty to promote this event and a big thanks to her.  And for   ³
³ all of you who came to the evening Halloween event, we thank you also, it  ³

³ We all face different things in our life each day.  Some things cause      ³
³ stress, some do not.  Regardless of your station in life, you can not      ³
³ determine the amount of stress another person has.  But then you don't     ³
³ truly need to.  All you need do is learn to cope with your own stress      ³
³ levels.  How does one achieve this?  Well, there have been, as of late,    ³
³ many places offering stress management to people.  Does it work?  That     ³
³ depends on you.  But one thing I have discovered that does work, and I     ³
³ didn't have to take a class for this, is visualization.  I close my eyes,  ³
³ just for a moment, and visualize a place that brings me a great deal of    ³
³ peace and calmness.  It is always a place I have visited and felt just that³
³ when there.  In that brief moment, of visualizing the pleasant location    ³
³ I once visited, I bring back that peaceful feeling and calmness.  It seems ³
³ to help release the tension and the stress generated in my busy life.      ³
³ Don't misunderstand, it is not a substitute for a vacation.  But it is a   ³
³ means of getting away for a moment while still remaining where you are.    ³
³ This process will work for some, but not for all.  Try it - take a break   ³
³ from your busy day - have a cup of tea or coffee - close your eyes and     ³
³ see that place that brings you peace and calm.  Be there!  See yourself    ³
³ there.  Remember how relaxed you were when you were there.  Remember how   ³
³ much at peace you were.  Take a mini vacation from stress.                 ³

³ Aud stood in the closet looking at the wall of suits hanging before        ³
³ her, thinking, 'Rand ol' boy, you sure had the clothes, no wonder          ³
³ Carol buys so much.  She caught the habit from you.' "Well, best get       ³
³ started," she said aloud, as she reached to the top shelve to remove       ³
³ a box.  As she removed the box, two envelopes, which had been              ³
³ concealed by the box and the wall, fell onto the shelf.  She sat the       ³
³ box down and reached on tip toe, to the shelf to secure the                ³
³ envelopes.  Once retrieved she discovered they were not envelopes at       ³
³ all, but two floppy disks, neither marked with any information.  Odd,      ³
³ she thought, Randy always kept everything together.  So why aren't         ³
³ these with the computer downstairs? "Oh well", she spoke out, as she       ³
³ walked across to the bed and placed the disks there.  "I'll use them       ³
³ when I get the computer home and up and running," she said, then           ³
³ returned to the closet.                                                    ³

³ By the time she finished it was nearly six.  She loaded the last of        ³
³ the computer equipment and manuals in the trunk of her car and drove       ³

³ "Oh my," she said, in a voice mimicking Carol, "a threat from you          ³
³ Jim?  I'm frightened," she laughed.                                        ³

³ "Come on, you can stop now.  I didn't make a threat, just stated a         ³
³ fact."                                                                     ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "There's a difference?"                                                    ³
³                                                                            ³
³ Their conversation went on like this all the way to the restaurant.        ³
³ She taunted him, he fell for it, both knowing what was happening, but      ³
³ having fun doing it.                                                       ³

³ As they stood, waiting to be seated, someone walked up behind Jim and      ³
³ said, "Mr. Fisher?"                                                        ³

³ Jim turned around saying "Yes?"                                            ³

³ "I thought that was you, Mr. Fisher.  And Miss Wood." Much to Jim's        ³

³ "This is my wife, Winny," Senior said, as he took her elbow to lead        ³

³ "Hon, this is Mr. Fisher and Miss Wood."                                   ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "How do you do Mr. Fisher," Winny said, reaching out her hand to           ³
³ shake his.  Then she reached for Aud's and said, "and Miss Wood."          ³

³ "Nice to see you," Senior said, as the two of them were rescued by         ³
³ the maitre d'.                                                             ³

³ "Fancy that," Aud said as they were being seated.  "A police               ³
³ detective being able to afford dinner here." She glanced at Jim, "You      ³
³ look bothered.  Is it because we bumped into him?"                         ³

³ "No, no of course not," Jim said as he stuck his index finger between      ³
³ his shirt collar and tie, as if the tie suddenly began choking him.        ³

³ Senior and Winny were seated on the other side of the restaurant, but      ³
³ still within vision of Jim and Aud.                                        ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "What a striking couple.  Who are they?" Winny asked.                      ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "Oh, just a couple I met on business," Senior said as he looked over       ³
³ towards them.  "Only when I met them, I don't think they were a            ³
³ couple."                                                                   ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "Nice looking aren't they," Winny stated, but Senior gave no               ³
³ response, he had retreated in his thoughts.                                ³
³                                                                            ³
³ The entire mood of the evening had changed.  Jim barely spoke through      ³
³ dinner, but when he did, he seemed to be pressured or nervous.  Aud        ³
³ had noted the sudden change, but thought it was merely the result of       ³
³ Blade reminding Jim of Randy's death.  She knew Jim and Randy's            ³
³ relationship was a close one and there was love for each other in the      ³
³ relationship.  They were friends, good friends, she thought, it must       ³

³ "Let's go somewhere, where we can walk.  Someplace quiet and just          ³
³ walk," she spoke the words slowly and softly.                              ³

³ "Sounds good to me.  How about the marina?"                                ³

³ "Perfect." They drove on towards the marina.  They did not talk very       ³
³ much as they drove.  Aud mentioned how wonderful the food was at the       ³
³ restaurant, Jim responded with, he hadn't noticed.  Neither spoke          ³
³ very much as they walked along the water's edge at the marina either.      ³
³ Aud became chilled and Jim took his suit jacket off and wrapped it         ³
³ around her shoulders.  They stood listening to the echoes of the           ³
³ night recoiling off the water, and watching the reflected lights           ³
³ bouncing on the ever moving surface of darkness.                           ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "Let's go home," Aud finally said.                                         ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "Home? Why?  I thought you were enjoying yourself."                        ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "I mean home, your home," she leaned into him as she spoke.                ³
³                                                                            ³
³ Jim escorted his lady through the front door of his home.  Walking         ³
³ her through the living room to the family room and lead her to the         ³
³ couch.  He went over to the wet bar, which sat on the other side of        ³
³ the room.                                                                  ³

³ What would you like?," he asked.  "Are you prepared for what I'd like?"    ³
³ "I mean to drink," he smiled.  "Oh!  A wine of some sort." "Name the       ³
³ type." "A dry Bordeaux." Jim disappeared, bending down behind the bar,     ³
³ when he stood straight again, he had a bottle of wine in one hand.  Much   ³
³ to Aud's surprise it was indeed a dry Bordeaux.  He uncorked it, poured    ³
³ a small amount in a stemmed crystal glass, sipped from the glass,          ³
³ tasting it's flavor, then smelled the bouquet of the wine remaining in     ³
³ the glass.  He then poured a half glass for Aud and another for himself.   ³
³ He carried the glasses over to where Aud sat.  Handed her one, then        ³
³ seated himself next to her on the couch.  She sipped.                      ³
³                                                                            ³
³ "Very good.  I didn't know you knew about wines." "There's a lot you       ³
³ probably don't know about me." "Yes, I suppose so." For some unknown       ³
³ reason, Aud suddenly felt nervous.  She did not understand why, but she    ³
³ did. Intuitively she felt she should leave, but she knew she would not.    ³
³ She started talking, rattling almost, as a result of this nervousness.     ³
³ "You know it's funny Jim.  We've known each other for a long time, and     ³
³ yet we don't really know anything about each other.  I don't know..."      ³
³ her words were stopped as Jim turned her face towards his and kissed       ³
³ her, a short yet passionate kiss.  "Any of the things you like or...."     ³

³ he kissed her again. "what your hobbies..." "Aud?", Jim said.  "Mmmm?"     ³
³ "Shut up!", he kissed her longingly, she relaxed and responded to him.     ³
³ He stood, bent down, taking her hand, "Come." She stood, as he             ³
³ straighten up, he lead her down the hall to the bedroom.                   ³
³                                                                            ³
³ A soft glow of light filtered through the drapes, from the street lamp     ³
³ outside, as Aud sat looking at the man lying beside her.  She had          ³
³ awakened almost thirty minutes ago but kept the silence the night had      ³
³ wrapped the house in.  As she studied his face, she thought how unusual    ³
³ it was for a man to sleep on his back and not snore.  His breathing        ³
³ barely encroached up the quiet.  She head the clock radio click, reached   ³
³ over to turn it off before the music invaded their world.  It was five     ³
³ o'clock.                                                                   ³
³                                                                            ³
³ She leaned over and gently kissed Jim on his unshaved cheek.  "Jim", she   ³
³ softly touched his shoulder.  "Jim", she said again, and he stirred a      ³
³ little under her hand.  "Jim, it's five o'clock."                          ³
³                                                                            ³
³ He opened his eyes slowly, focusing on Aud's face.  "You weren't a         ³
³ dream?"                                                                    ³

³ "No.  I've got to get home for Carol wakes."                               ³

³ "All right.  Bit I think we could..."                                      ³

³ "I was going to say, have breakfast first."                                ³

³ "Oh, oh!  No, I think I should get home."                                  ³

³ "Okay, if that's what you want", he said raising up on his elbow, he       ³
³ leaned over Aud and gave her a light kiss on the cheek.  "Let's haul       ³

³ She smiled as he stopped himself.  They both dressed and walked to his     ³
³ car and he drove her home.                                                 ³

³ The theater was closed.  The lady, co-owner, entered the theater with her  ³
³ Doberman, so she could clean.  She sensed right away that something was    ³
³ not right.  On the lower level everything seemed ok.  But when she and     ³
³ the dog went to the second level, the dog started growling, his hair went  ³
³ up and he showed his teeth.  The dog broke free of his owner, raced head   ³
³ long towards the glass door, jump at it with his front feet, pushed it     ³
³ open and ran outside.  He kept running on down the road, away from the     ³
³ theater.  The owner got her car and followed after the dog, finally        ³
³ catching up with him about a mile away from the theater.  It took her a    ³
³ long time to calm the dog down and get him in the car.  When she got back  ³
³ to the theater she left the dog in the car.  The dog began barking, and    ³
³ kept barking until the lady finally had to leave the theater and take the  ³
³ dog home.                                                                  ³
³ The next night she took the dog with her again.  This time the dog did     ³
³ nothing.  No reaction at all.                                              ³
³ On another occasion, the lady was at the theater with her eleven year old  ³
³ daughter.  Her daughter was down on the stage playing by the screen and    ³
³ suddenly she started screaming.  The woman raced to her daughter and saw   ³
³ the curtains on either side of the screen moving back and forth.  As if    ³
³ someone where on the backside of them pushing them.  The woman went behind ³

³ Probably the most eerie of events to occur at the theateris the ghostly    ³
³ laughter.  It would fill the theater.  No matter how often they, the       ³
³ employees, checked the theater, they found no one.  But the laughter would ³
³ continue.  It didn't seem to matter what film was being shown either, and  ³
³ yes it happened during showings.  The screen could have a very serious     ³
³ event taking place on it, but the laughter would continue and fill the     ³
³ theater.  Some people believed the laughter was coming from the third      ³
³ row.  But they could find no one seated there.                             ³
³ One evening the doorman and janitor, one and the same person, sat down in  ³
³ a seat to rest while cleaning up the theater.  A few moments later the     ³
³ seat next to him went down, as if someone were sitting down in the seat.   ³
³ No one was there however.  The doorman got up and ran the other direction. ³
³ The history of the theater is not one of length.  It was built in the      ³
³ 1960s.  In the 1980s it was renovated twice.  But near the theater is a    ³
³ wood area that once was an Indian burial ground.  No one knows if anyone   ³
³ ever died on the site of the theater or in the wood area nearby.  One      ³
³ person, it is said, who worked at the theater was killed in a car accident ³
³ one night on her way home from work.  Some speculate she may be haunting   ³
³ the theater, however the sounds heard seem to be that of a man.  Further,  ³

³ people were killed in traffic crashes in Virginia, the 2nd lowest number   ³
³ reported in VA since 1962.  Preliminary reports also show that VA's mileage³
³ death rate of 1.32 deaths for every 100 million miles of travel is the     ³
³ lowest in VA's history.  In 1962, Virginia's mileage death rate was 5.7.   ³
³ Of the 868 fatalities reported for 1993, 429 were not wearing safety belts,³
³ 182 were wearing safety belts, 158 were not required to wear safety belts &³
³ 99 were undetermined.  VA Police report troopers issued 15,242 summonses   ³
³ for safety belt violations & 1,477 for child restraint violations through  ³
³ the end of Nov 1993. In addition, troopers arrested 8,577 motorists for    ³
³ driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the same time period.   ³
³ Preliminary stats show encouraging trends for 1993:                        ³
³  - A decrease in fatalities involving teenagers ages 16-20.                ³
³     These fatalities are down by 25%, from 134 in 1992 to 100 in '93.      ³
³  - A decrease in non-collision fatal crashes.  These crashes are down      ³
³    by 21%, from 136 in 1992 to 107 in 1993.                                ³
³  - A decrease in fatalities involving motorcyclists.  These fatalities     ³

³ Congressional hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans' Affairs in  ³

³ will be held in the second floor court room of the Federal Building 2100,  ³
³ 9th St., Meridian, Miss.  Among the witnesses scheduled to testify are     ³

³ detachment of the 3656th Maintenance Company), a National Guard unit in    ³
³ Waynesboro, Miss.  As many as 13 of 15 children born to veterans in the    ³
³ Guard detachment since its return from the Persian Gulf have experienced   ³
³ serious medical problems, including blood and respiratory disorders.       ³

³ Chicago, asserted a state-established fund excluded otherwise qualified    ³
³ employees who were disabled at the time they joined local police & fire    ³
³ Depts. The Dept said the policy violated the 1990 Americans with Disabil-  ³
³ ities Act (ADA).  Title I of the ADA prohibits discrimination against      ³
³ qualified individuals with disabilities in all employment practices,       ³
³ including compensation & other privileges of employment, such as pension   ³
³ plans. The Dept's investigation in IL resulted from the complaint of one   ³
³ of the Aurora police officers - an individual with diabetes. The lawsuit   ³
³ asks the Court to declare the state's police & firefighter pension laws    ³
³ unlawful. It also seeks an order requiring IL & its communities to provide ³
³ police officers & firefighters equal access to benefit plans, & a prohib-  ³
³ ition against discriminatory employment practices in the future. Addition- ³
