REVIEW: INTERNET HOW-TO
REVIEW: INTERNET HOW-TO by Larry Henderson The Waitr Group 1994
ISBN: 1-878739-68-9 Paperbound 468 pages $34.95 US, $48.95 Canada
This book includes over 200 "how-tos" in question & answer format that
makes expanding your Internet knowledge easier and more enjoyable. To
be sure, it can be a "first book" for a total beginner, but can also
be considered as a second book as well.
In many ways, INTERNET HOW-TO is a problem solver - want to know how to
get started, use mail, read usenet news, talk to other users, get files
with ftp, use TELNET/RLOGIN, find software with Archie, use Gopher,
look up information with WAIS, and navigating by WWW - the Q&A format
is excellent for addressing certain questions with informative and
authoritative replies that will help you acquire more Net skills in small
but measurable increments. Each "how-to" carries a complexity
classification of easy, intermediate or advanced and this may serve to
give added confidence as one progresses through them. Its a nice touch!
I liked the presentation of Larry Henderson's book and it is written in a
no-nonsense style that is easy to read and understand. The ilustrations
are clear and help give understanding to the concepts explained in the
text. Once the reader has reached his or her level of competence in
net use, INTERNET HOW-TO will serve as a good reference to less often
used utilities and functions. This is one of a few net books that
is worthy of consideration for those who wish to attain a higher net
proficiency than the norm.
